A sports club in Enniskillen recently commemorated a decade since their traditional currach was launched.

Row the Erne celebrated on Thursday, August 15, toasting to The Menapian which was launched on Lough Erne.

The gathering brought together both founding and current committee members of the club, along with key partners who have supported its growth through funding over the years.

The National Lottery Communities Fund and National Lottery Heritage Fund have been crucial in keeping the club afloat.

The Communities Fund aided in the initial construction of the currach in 2014 while the Heritage Fund is currently backing Row the Erne’s "Together for Ten" heritage project.

Nikki McVeigh, a Northern Ireland committee member at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, the Heritage Fund is so pleased to be able to support Row the Erne in celebrating their first ten years of taking to the water as they continue to introduce more people to the skills of rowing a currach whilst taking in the natural and built heritage of Lough Erne from the water.”

Barbara Irwin, chairperson at Row the Erne, said: "We are delighted to welcome members of Row the Erne’s founding committee with current members and volunteers to celebrate the clubs’ journey over the past 10 years."

Under the "Together for Ten" project, Row the Erne aims to expand the diversity of its rowers while including those who are less likely to participate in heritage or water-based activities.

Participating groups so far have included the Erne District Chinese Group, Fermanagh Down Syndrome Group, Fermanagh Pride Group, Rossory Ravens Explorers Scouts Group, Fermanagh Men’s Social Group and the committee and volunteers of Aisling Centre.

Lee Orman, chairperson of Fermanagh Men’s Social Group, said: “Getting out rowing on the currach was a great experience for the men, as well as working as a team - we all took time to take in the views from the Lough and to learn about Row the Erne.

"We had great craic and we’re all looking forward to using our vouchers to join Row the Erne on the water again."
