There was local joy for some of Enniskillen’s rowers at the Carrick-on-Shannon Regatta last weekend with a handful of gold medals coming back to Fermanagh.
Due to weather conditions over the weekend, the sprint regatta turned out to be very challenging but that didn’t stop youngster Josh Allen from grabbing two gold medals after being entered for both the Junior 13 and Junior 14 Single Sculls events where he fended off the rest of the competition to comfortably come first in both races, representing Enniskillen Royal Boat Club.
Gerry Murphy and Chris Allen, from Portora Boat Club, competed with a younger crew from Sligo Boat Club, but expert rowing saw them sail away from their opponents and open up a gap to allow them to cruise home to clinch gold in the Masters Double Sculls.
Chris Allen also had a successful individual weekend as he took top spot in the Masters Single Sculls ahead of a Sligo Boat Club.
After a last-minute change, Josh Allen joined Chris Allen in a combined father-son crew of Portora Boat Club and Enniskillen Royal Boat Club, in the Club Double Sculls, with the pair combining as both the youngest and oldest age group categories in rowing.
After an impressive race, the pair were narrowly beaten, right at the end, with their Belfast Rowing Club opponents coming out on top in the final.
