Division Two’s two unbeaten teams meet in the league final on Sunday at Brewster Park after they both sealed promotion back to Division One.

One point was the difference between the St. Molaise’s side and the Shamrocks.

That came from Irvinestown's win against Sunday’s opponents in the second-place play-off in the Club Players’ Competition.

It means Irvinestown remain the only unbeaten Division Two side in all competitions this year.

Shane McDermott has hit the ground running since making the step-up from minor to senior manager.

He’s brought through five minors from last year who have all excelled and played a key role in Irvinestown’s impressive league campaign.

“Listen one draw and the rest wins, yeah, we’re happy with them,” McDermott said looking ahead to Sunday.

“It’s where we wanted to be. It meets the targets, so we’re happy.

"It’s (unbeaten streak) came very close, the likes of Tempo and the likes of Teemore was very close. We drew with Teemore, it was a very tight game, and we were lucky enough to do that.

"The final is going to be a tough battle, to be honest.”

Barry Goodwin, Mattie McDermott, James Hanna, Oisin Swift and Aaron Hall have all made the step-up in the senior side this summer.

“Yeah that’s been pleasing, I suppose we have a lot of fairly good experienced players and the younger lads have joined in well with it and helped both through the squad,” McDermott added.

“You never know what the effect will be. The younger lads in the senior team are accomplished at their own age group but for them to come into the seniors and to be contributing is a big plus for us.

"Two years ago we went up and unfortunately weren’t able to stay up, so, this time we will hopefully prepare properly and hopefully stay up, take it year by year.”

When asked about the quality of Teemore, McDermott responded: “They are always tough battles.

"In the Club Players’, they were without a lot of players because they were without the McNally’s and (Ronan) McCaffrey. But the last game there in the league was a tight affair and, thankfully, we got out with a draw but I suppose there’s gonna be improvements in both sides and from that, whoever does that, will be the winners in the final. It’s going to be a tough enough game.”

Tony Collins guided Teemore to the Intermediate Championship last year and has now steered them to promotion after a gripping one-point win over Tempo last Friday.

After near misses in the final league game in years past, Collins was relieved to finally get the job done last week: “It was a real test as we knew it was going to be.

"There’s nothing between the teams. Even last year, we drew with them in the league proper, and there were no quarters given. Tempo are an experienced outfit and are well set up, but delighted to get over the line, to be honest.

"We probably made life difficult for ourselves coming into the last four or five minutes and Tempo came back on us. We’ve shown a wee bit of resolve and have been doing so all year, maybe not playing exciting football but just getting through games and getting wins which is always important.

"We’ve been slightly frustrated this last four or five years, maybe getting caught at the last game, every year or every other year. The fact that they managed to get through this year was probably a weight lifted off their (the players) shoulders because we’ll go up to Division One and I’m excited for that challenge next year.

"There’s a league final first and a championship after, so, we’ll think about Division One when preparing next year.”

Teemore and Irvinestown played out a thrilling championship semi-final last year at St. Patrick’s Park as it went all the way to extra-time before the Shamrocks eventually pulled away.

After a defeat early in the year and a draw in the league with McDermott’s side, Collins knows how tight Sunday’s affair in Enniskillen will be as he seeks a win heading into the senior championship.

“It’s a similar scenario to Tempo, there’s nothing between the teams,” he continued.

“We drew down in Irvinestown this year and had a good battle in the championship last year. In fact, if anything, they are probably a bit stronger than last year, they have obviously younger lads who can play now, they have a great blend of youth and experience.

"Shane (McDermott) has done a great job and they’re definitely on an upward trajectory. We’ll be hopeful we can match them in a league final, so, it’s all to play for.

"Win, lose or draw it will be a good competitive game, we’ll obviously be going out to win it if we can. It will definitely stand the lads well in regards to preparation for the senior championship.

"It’s a winner-takes-all game, we’ll be playing two weeks down the line after so it will be good preparation.”
