There was joy for Erne rower Acorn Cassidy as they picked up a silver medal at the U19 World Rowing Championships in Canada.
Acorn competed in the Women’s Four (JW4-) under coach Bodo Schulenburg, representing Great Britain, as they and their teammates secured a second-place finish in the A Final with Romania taking gold.
Acorn has enjoyed a successful year with Erne Royal Boat Club and landed two medals at the club's season finale outing in Cork at the Irish Championships.
Acorn was selected to represent GB alongside Emily Nicholas (Sir William Perkins’s School), Martha Shepherd (Hinksey Sculling School) and Natasha Philips (Wycliffe College).
The boat of four got off to a flying start at St Catharine’s in Canada as they took top spot in Heat 1 last Thursday, finishing just over five seconds ahead of second-place Italy.
With that win, they booked their place in Sunday’s final against New Zealand, France, Germany, Romania and Czech Republic.
GB led the race after the two-minute mark but Romania closed the gap and led at the 1500m stage.
Romania got over the line with a time of 07:06.42, while GB crossed the finish line at 07:08.71.
Czech Republic came third (07:10.69), France in third (07:15.04), Germany in fourth (07:19.95) and finally New Zealand in sixth (07:21.17).
Acorn will now begin a new chapter in her rowing career when she travels to America after gaining a scholarship with the University of Syracuse to compete for the Syracuse Women's Rowing set-up.
