Ederney 0-08 Derrygonnelly 3-12

Derrygonnelly got back to winning ways with a convincing victory at St Joseph’s Park with a scoreline of 0-08 to 3-12.

Gary McKenna hit 1-03 for the visitors while goalkeepers Chris Snow and Jack Kelly hit 0-03 each.

After dropping a point in the closing minutes of their opener with Devenish the previous weekend, the Harps were quick to push themselves in front on Sunday.

They scored 1-03 in the opening ten minutes to take a six-point lead. Stephen McGullion laid the ball off to Rory-Joe Duffy who watched his high effort sail over the bar in the second minute.

Shane McGullion used his pace to get in behind the Ederney defence and hook over a shot off the left foot.

Jack Kelly opened his account for the day with a sweetly struck ’45, and with ten minutes on the clock, a sweeping Harps move saw Rian McGovern play a fisted ball over the top for Gareth McGovern to latch onto and he came hurtling towards goal from an angle before finishing low at the near post.

Pól McKervey got the home side off the mark with a left-footed strike and although Ederney had a fair share of possession, they struggled to part the Derrygonnelly defence as another swift counter saw room open up for Stephen McGullion to slice over a fourth point for the away team.

Chris Snow hit a fantastic outside-of-the-boot effort from play to cut the gap. After nearly seven minutes without a score, Gareth McGovern tagged on another point as McKervey and Kelly were both on target after, leaving the halftime score 1-06 to 0-03.

Snow settled his side into the second half with an early free but disaster then struck for the hosts as Oisin Smyth’s shot was stopped by Paul McCusker and referee Eoin Murphy awarded Derrygonnelly a penalty for a foot block and a second yellow card to McCusker giving Ederney a double blow.

Gary McKenna finished high and left to the net from the spot to make it 2-06 to 0-04.

Kelly was called into action at the other end as he was forced to punch away a dropping ball in from Enda Cassidy.

McKenna added another point before Snow and Seán Cassidy both sent over frees.

McKenna pointed twice more alongside Kelly with Cassidy responding and full-back Manus Maguire launching an outside-of-the-boot effort from range that pinged over.

Substitute Declan Cassidy hit 1-01 in injury time as he sold a dummy before rounding Snow and rolling the ball in for a third Derrygonnelly goal.

The resultant kick-out was lost and came back to Cassidy who chipped over a final score of the game to wrap up a first Harps win.
