Derrygonnelly’s hopes of retaining the New York Cup got back on track with a 13-point win in Ederney on Sunday.
A late goal from Stephen O’Brien was followed by an equalising point from Fionan O’Brien to ensure Devenish and Derrygonnelly would share a point on the opening day at Canon Maguire Park.
However, there would be no chances of a late Ederney comeback as the Harps finished strong and were clinical in the final third as they netted three goals on the road.
Joint Derrygonnelly manager Paul Greene was pleased to see his team respond in the right way.
“Yes, we are very happy with the win and a very good team performance with everyone contributing,” Greene said after Sunday’s encounter.
They will now face Erne Gaels in the final group game when Senior Championship action returns in just over a week.
Derrygonnelly will hope they can take a similar outcome from last year’s final as a win would see the top Group B.
“Looking forward to a huge challenge that we will face from Erne Gaels who have been going extremely well and are probably the form team in the county at present,” added Greene.
Meanwhile, Ederney boss Chris Kelly knows his team will have to improve if they want to stay in the competition when they play Devenish: “Not good enough. We’ll get our heads down over the next two weeks now and make sure we are the next day.”
