Enniskillen Athletic 2-1 Moyola Park Olympic
Enniskillen Athletic advanced through to the next round of the Junior Cup with a 2-1 at home to Moyola Park Olympic.
Goals from Jonathan Brownlee and Emmet Cassidy were enough to see off the visiting side at the Lakeland Forum as Athletic ended their first-round Junior Cup losing run.
Speaking after the game, player/manager Cassidy was pleased to see his side book a spot in the next round of the competition.
“It was a brilliant win for us, I feel we were in control for most of the game, took our goals well and gave up very few chances throughout,” he said.
“We didn’t really know what to expect from them, as can be the case with some junior cup fixtures, but I thought they were a really well-organised young side with some great players.
"We definitely didn’t play as good as we could on the day, but the result is all that matters in the end up.”
The home side made a bright start with some early possession and carved out a few half chances but none that greatly threatened the Moyola goalkeeper.
They did take the lead with just 22 minutes gone as Cassidy swung in a corner from the left and Brownlee, who was stood just in front of the goalkeeper, headed the ball in for 1-0.
Both sides went close to the game’s second goal as either goalkeeper were forced into saves.
However, the sides went into halftime with just one goal separating them. Athletic would double their lead just past the hour mark as they were awarded a free-kick on the corner of the box.
Captain Dermot Lewsley delivered a cross to the back post and Cassidy found room to volley into the net. The away side pushed men forward in the final 20 minutes in search of a way back into the game and they found a breakthrough with just over 10 minutes to go.
A low-driven shot trickled into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Athletic held off any late advances as they await the draw for the next round.
