It was a largely successful weekend for Fermanagh and Western teams in the opening round of the Junior Cup at the weekend.
13 of the 18 teams playing recorded wins and advanced into round two, with the rest of the teams in action this coming weekend including an all-F&W tie between Orchard Farm and Augher Stars.
Drumquin United were defeated 1-0 away to Belfast Athletic, Castlecaulfield beat Lisnarick 4-2, Mountfield and Dergview Reserves both lost 6-0 while Enniskillen Galaxy were defeated 2-1 away to Newcastle Town Swifts.
“It was a disappointing result on Saturday,” said Galaxy boss Christopher Corrigan looking back on the game.
“We didn’t start the game and didn’t really get going throughout the first half and we had no complaints going in at the break 2-1 down.
"We played much better in the second half, created a lot of opportunities to score, but just couldn’t put the ball in the net, unfortunately.
"We would have liked to get to the next round, but it wasn’t to be, back to the league next week and hopefully keep our good start going.”
Newcastle took the lead after 23 minutes but Galaxy drew level when a quick move ended with Joseph Donnelly sending a shot to the net off the post.
A penalty before halftime from Timothy Sexton would be the deciding goal. Ardstraw defeated 22nd Old Boys 2-1 and Beragh Swifts beat Banbridge Town Reserves 4-2. Mark O’Sullivan’s goal in the eighth minute was enough for Dubreen Rovers to secure a 1-0 win over Lurgan BBOB.
Fintona Swifts put three past Cooke Athletic, while goals from Rafal Rostocki, Harvey Latimer, Marcus O’Hara and Ben Irwin saw Fivemiletown United Development see off Tullymore Swifts 4-2.
A goal two minutes into injury time from Ryan McFarland also saw Mountjoy United through to the next round with a 2-1 win at home to Cookstown Youth Reserves.
