St Patrick’s 0-09 Irvinestown 0-14

Irvinestown were made to work for it, but eventually, Shane McDermott’s side landed their first championship win and in doing so ended St Pat’s chances of progressing through to the next round.

After a close-fought battle in the first-half, Irvinestown pulled away scoring nine points in the final 30 minutes.

The away side were playing against the breeze to begin with at the Louis Leonard Memorial Park but they opened the scoring with early points coming in from Mattie McDermott, Gary Maguire and Ronan Ormsby to open up a lead.

The hosts responded through Eoghan Curran and Tiernan Wray to close the gap but again McDermott found space to split the posts.

Goalkeeper Shea Mulligan came up from the back to convert a long-range free for the St Molaises side as two frees before halftime from Brian McDermott made it 0-05 to 0-04.

Joe Cadden levelled the game with an early point in the second half but the away side quickly found some rhythm to go ahead again with McDermott, John Doonan and Liam Murphy all pointing.

It was a much different affair than the side’s league meeting where Irvinestown netted six goals as this time Donagh stayed in the game as efforts from Curran and two from Jimmy Tormey found their way between the posts.

Ronan Ormsby was on target with a free as was Josh Largo Elis with a ’45.

Two points each from Gary Maguire and Ormsby, in response to Brian McDermott, would ensure a five-point win for Irvinestown.

The win sees them go level on points with group leaders Lisnaskea with their final fixture coming against Derrylin this Saturday.

They’ll be hoping the Emmets drop points in their local derby with St Pat’s at the same time with the top three side’s all still battling for first spot and an automatic place in the semi-final.
