Irvinestown 4-13 Derrylin 1-05
Irvinestown had a big win over Derrylin but it still wasn’t enough to get them a semi-final slot as their rivals Lisnaskea had a massive win over St. Pat’s, Donagh.
The winners played with a huge breeze in the opening half and had a handsome half time lead of 3-08 to 1-01.
The first five to eight minutes were cagey enough before Irvinestown got on the scoring charts through Josh Largo-Elis, Ronan Ormsby, Barry Goodwin and the promising Mattie McDermott.
Oisin Swift added another point as they led by 0-05 to 0-00 after 15 minutes.
The impressive Conor O’Hanlon then strode through and hit a rocket to the top of the net as the Derrylin defence retreated.
Irvinestown then tacked on two points from Ormsby, one from play and one from a free and they led by 1-07 to 0-00 after 20 minutes.
Derrylin did manage a retort of sorts when Donal McAvinue fielded a high ball, and he was hauled down in the Irvinestown square and Luke Flanagan converted the penalty with aplomb a minute later.
But Irvinestown sealed the game five minutes later when Jarlath Maguire goaled and a quickly taken mark by Mattie McDermott found Josh Largo-Elis who hammered the ball to the net.
Ormsby landed another point for Irvinestown and McAvinue replied for Derrylin, who badly missed marksman Jake Smith.
The winners led by 3-08 to 1-01 but Derrylin could only manage four more points with big wind on the resumption.
O’Hanlon and Ormsby had the opening points as Derrylin responded through Luke Flanagan, Kian Prior and a McAvinue mark.
McDermott and Fergal McGovern exchanged points and Pauric Owens hit a fine long range point.
But Irvinestown were still in command and Tiarnan Daly hit a point and Oisin Swift hit their fourth goal to seal a fine win.
Barry Goodwin had the final point for Irvinestown, a side with fairly serious championship ambitions.
Irvinestown now have a tricky tussle with Roslea to make the semi-finals, while Derrylin play Tempo for the remaining semi-final slot.
