Orchard Farm 3-3 Augher Stars (Orchard Farm win 5-3 on penalties)
The only all-Fermanagh and Western tie in the first round of the fonaCAB Irish Junior Cup went all the way to penalties as Division Two Orchard Farm knocked out Mercer League newbies Augher Stars on penalties.
The sides were level at 2-2 after 90 minutes but further goals from Gavin Kee and Mark Treanor saw the sides go to penalties at 3-3.
Orchard Farm exacted revenge on Augher after defeat to them in the Mulhern Cup quarter-final last season, leaving new boss Shane O’Donnell pleased with the win.
“I thought we were in total control during the game even though they did come back at us,” he said.
“They scored late goals in normal time and extra-time their goalkeeper made some great saves but we are happy to be in the hat for the next round and we’ll look forward to another game there.
"We have Newtownstewart up next in the league which will be a difficult game. Ballinamallard needed two late goals to beat them the last time they played in the league, so it will be tough.
"We’ll be hoping to add a few more of the Gaelic lads in the coming weeks to make the squad bigger.”
Farm got off to an ideal start on Saturday in Fivemiletown as Seamie Quigley gave them the lead after just two minutes on the King George Playing Fields.
Gavin Kee beat his man before lifting his head and finding Quigley who steadied himself to make it 1-0.
The same man almost made it 2-0 when he got on the end of a cross but headed over the crossbar.
Farm held possession for large parts of the first-half but there would be no further goals as the teams went into the break at 1-0.
Craig McSweeney tied the game just seven minutes into the second half with a neat finish but it didn’t take long for Farm to go back in front when Tiarnan Elliot lofted another ball into the box for Quigley to finish into the bottom corner first time.
Augher goalkeeper Jason Brennan was forced into a couple of key saves while Michael McGrath was also called into action at the other end. Stars drew level when Rory McElroy came up from the back to find the net with just minutes remaining, 2-2.
The sides went into extra-time and it was again Farm who got their noses in front. Scott Armstrong sent a ball and Quigley headed across the box for Kee to run onto and finish for 3-2.
Augher stayed in it again and hit a late equaliser as a free kick led to a scramble and Treanor poked home to tie it.
Quigley tucked away the first penalty of the shootout with Fintan Kelly then missing his kick. The remaining penalties were dispatched as Farm advanced through to the next round.
