Ederney 1-13 Devenish 0-12
A flicked goal from Ederney’s talismanic Martin McGrath was the key score that gave a decimated Ederney the cushion they needed to get over a determined Devenish.
McGrath’s goal came in the 26th minute with the sides locked together at 0-05 each.
It came from a high ball lofted into the Devenish square and McGrath soared high to get a hand to the ball and direct it into the net.
It was his first appearance of the season but Ederney were forced to call on their greatest leader after the recently returned Sean Cassidy was ruled out again through injury.
This was a huge score and pushed Ederney to a 1-07 to 0-06 lead at the break.
But Chris Kelly’s young men were well worth their valuable victory which sets them up for a quarter-final date with Kinawley this weekend.
It is more remarkable given that they are minus eight starters from last season.
Devenish had the better start to the game with points from the imposing Stephen O’Brien and Jason Love.
It took Ederney 14 minutes to get their first point from Paul McCusker.
Terry O’Flanagan from a free and Declan McCusker and Pól McKervey had points for Ederney but Lanty Feely and Conor McGowan put the Blues ahead by 0-05 to 0-04 by the 18th minute.
Paul McCusker levelled matters just before McGrath’s vital goal which really turned this game on its head.
Ederney had a bounce now and Manus Maguire and Shay Deazley pushed them into a 1-07 to 0-06 lead at the break with Cian O’Brien hitting Devenish’s final point of the half.
McKervey extended Ederney’s lead before Fionan O’Brien exploded into action for Devenish hitting three points in a row in the 5th, 7th and 10th minutes of the second-half from frees as Devenish mounted a spirited revival.
McKervey and Paul McCusker responded for Ederney leaving them in front by 1-10 to 0-09.
But O’Brien continued to lead the Garrison surge and hit three more points on the spin with Ederney replying through Shay Deazley and Chris Snow to leave Ederney leading by 1-12 to 0-12 going into injury time.
But Calvin Browne got the final point for a relieved Ederney.
Meanwhile, Devenish must now face into a relegation play-off with Belnaleck.
