Enniskillen Cricket Club played their final match of the season on Saturday last when they hosted Belfast Superkings 2s at Erne Integrated College.

The match was the only competitive cricket match to be held in Northern Ireland on this date and befittingly turned out to be a cracker going down yet again for the local team to the last ball but as so many times before this season resulted in a 2 wicket defeat in a season of so many agonisingly close matches.

Enniskillen batted first on a dry and cloudy day and opening batsmen Stephen Maxwell and Aby Theckanath set a foundation for a competitive total with an opening stand of 62 in just ten overs.

Theckanath was back to his best after a few lean matches hitting 47 and the skipper rounded off a decent season for him with the bat also with a classy 22 when both got out trying to up the run rate the remaining batsmen kept the momentum going even increasing the run rate led by Bibin Tommy with a hard-hitting 29 n.o and the home team for the first time in quite a few matches posted a very competitive 150/6 after the allotted 20 overs.

After the break, Enniskillen took to the field and for the first half of the Belfast Superkings innings were well in control however the lack of a regular fifth bowler on the day was to prove costly in the end but the match came down to the last ball.

With the scores tied and the home team positioned close into the batsmen to prevent the single, the BSK batsman managed to get the ball over the nearest fielders head and run the required run for victory.

It was disappointment yet again then for Enniskillen to once again have victory snatched from their grasp but the fire and passion shown by the team was excellent and something which they will hope to build on for next season.

Jaice Cherian took 2 wickets and Bibin Matthew, Bibin Tommy and Aby Theckanath in the unaccustomed role of bowler took one each backed up by three sharp runouts.

So the season comes to an end for Enniskillen. No doubt a difficult one at times. Of their matches, eight went down to the last over and four of those to the last ball which frankly some of the more experienced members of the team had never witnessed in their years of playing.

With a potential restructuring of the leagues in the NCU next season the players will have to wait to see where they will be playing next season.

However, the club thanks everyone for their efforts and commitment in the past year with special thanks to club patron Tina Maxwell who took care of the catering for home matches and all teams who visited commented on the high standards of the hospitality received.
