Kinawley manager Barry McKenna knows a thing or two about Fermanagh football having been already involved with Tempo and Brookeborough men’s teams.

But, the affable Clogher native took on a new challenge this year when he took the reins at the hugely successful Kinawley ladies side, who have now taken a remarkable seven Fermanagh county titles on the trot.

And McKenna paid a huge compliment to his charges.

“I am from Clogher, and I was with Tempo and Brookeborough and a few teams in Tyrone," he said.

“I was with Tempo last year and one of my mates mentioned my name to Kinawley and they approached me and I met up with them and they told me what they wanted to achieve.

“That is what we are trying to do and while one county championship is quite an achievement to win seven is really phenomenal and I am so privileged to be in this position.”

McKenna added that seven-in-a-row was a real credit to the girls.

“They are highly motivated and have a great hunger for success and that keeps driving them on and they don’t want to stop at seven and they just want to keep going on and that keeps driving them on for more success.

“Ulster is now the next challenge as we try and get that monkey off our back and try and get over the first round which has not been done before at senior level.

“So that is our main priority, and we will be playing the winners of Emyvale and Clann Eireann.”

When asked what was the thing that struck him most about this remarkable bunch of players, he said: “They are a great bunch of girls and we have a good backroom team and no matter what we ask the girls at training they do it and they work hard and they get their rewards.

“We have nine girls on the county senior squad and in my opinion, there should be at least three or four more.

“We are just happy to get there tonight. Lisa Maguire brings huge energy and Joanne Doonan was very good too and she was a professional out in Australia and she showed that tonight.

“We kept possession in the second half against the wind and it worked and we are just so delighted and we will enjoy the night.”
