The wins keep coming for Shane McDermott and Irvinestown.
Just over a week on from their minor league success in Division One, McDermott led the St Molaises side onto this year’s Intermediate Championship final with a final four victory over Belcoo.
“Listen the lads played well,” McDermott said on the game.
“Belcoo is a formidable enough side, they stayed up in Division One this year, the lads worked hard and controlled it for large parts of the game.”
When asked how important getting early scores were to his side, he responded: “Absolutely it was key to the performance alright yeah.
"Getting an early start and getting points on the board was key you know. It has been building steadily I suppose, it was a good enough performance and yeah we have just been building performance on performance.”
Irvinestown began their championship campaign with a draw at home to Lisnaskea, who they will meet in this year’s final, but have gone on to beat St Pat’s, Derrylin and the O’Rahilly’s since.
“Yeah we had that tough game at the start which we drew against Lisnaskea and then we’ve been going ok since then,” McDermott added.
Meanwhile, Belcoo boss Michael McGillen was left frustrated with his side’s performance after topping Group A to book an automatic semi-final spot.
“Very very disappointed with the result,” McGillen said. “Very disappointed with our own performance. I thought a lot of our key players didn’t turn up.
"I thought the turning point again was our slow start to the game and then the Irvinestown goal before halftime was really a killer punch.”
Despite coming back into the game in the second half, Irvinestown held off any hopes of Belcoo getting back into the game.
McGillen acknowledged his team were facing a side very much on the rise and a side that they will face in Division One next year following Irvinestown’s promotion: “We never managed to claw the lead back even though, in the second half, we were playing with a breeze, I thought shot selection and decision making on the ball was very poor.
"So, overall, very disappointed but it’s a good Irvinestown team. A good young, fit Irvinestown team and we’d like to wish them the very best in the final.”
