Lisbellaw United 9-1 Belfast Athletic
Lisbellaw left little in their wake as they pushed aside Belfast Athletic in a 9-1 win at Drumad.
There were five different scorers for United as Richard Woods netted a hat-trick while Sam Lindsay and Craig Johnston both bagged braces on Saturday to follow on from their 8-2 win over Broomhedge in the opening round.
Kyle McCleery was pleased to see his side make it 17 goals scored in just two Junior Cup games so far: “A good, convincing performance from us.
"They did put it up to us for about half an hour in the first half but we were always in control I felt, and they were completely out on their feet in the second half.”
It took just two minutes for Lisbellaw’s scoring spree to start as Johnston went on a run down the left wing and sent a low cross into the box that was guided into the net by the inside of Lindsay’s foot.
Athletic bounced back well from the early setback and enjoyed possession around the middle of the park.
They were rewarded for their play just past the 20-minute mark when Jamie Delaney smashed in a left-footed strike from range into the top right corner to level the game.
Lindsay was on hand to give United the lead again just shy of the half-hour mark when a ball into the box was knocked down by Jamie Coalter and Lindsay finished from close range.
Lisbellaw struck twice just before halftime as Johnston started a move out wide before continuing his run into the area and finishing off a Woods cross.
A Peter Armstrong header found the inside of the net to make it 4-1 and put McCleery’s side in total control.
Lisbellaw completely took over in the second half Woods opened his account with ten minutes gone after nutmegging goalkeeper Fionntan Morgan from Lindsay’s through ball.
Johnston scored his second with a delightful chip from outside the box for 6-1.
Johnston, who starred throughout, then set up Woods and Scott Moutray to push the lead further.
Woods rounded off the scoring and claimed his hat-trick by beating four defenders and sending a left-footed shot past Morgan for 9-1. Lisbellaw will return to the league action when they come up against Beragh Swifts at home on Saturday.
