Mark Little is one of two remaining players from Lisnaskea’s All-Ireland Intermediate Championship winning side from 2011.
He and Mark Smith were both involved as the Emmetts lifted the county title in 2010 before going on to lift the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship the following February, the only Erne club to do so.
13 years on, Little finds himself back in an Intermediate Championship final having picked up a Junior medal last year.
“Our target at the start of the year was to make the championship final, we knew we had a good enough squad to do it,” he said.
“We trained for it, we didn’t have that bad of a league, we just missed out on a few results, they didn’t go our way. But to get back to a championship final, two years in a row, is very exciting.
"We were all disappointed at going down to Juniors. But, look we’re back now and it probably helped these younger boys, from winning the Junior, they have come on leaps and bounds, in one year, and going into Ulster has probably brought us into this final this year.”
When asked to compare this year’s side to the team who beat St James’ of Galway in 2011, Little responded: “They’d be similar in some aspects.
"This year, we are rebuilding, our team is very young compared to then, we were more established I suppose, more players playing regularly then, we have a lot of younger boys who have come through the last few years that have really stepped up and got better.”
Little is now 43 years of age and is in his 27th year of playing senior football, having made his debut at the age of 16 in 1997.
He still plays a key role for John Reihill’s side, scoring a goal in their semi-final win over Tempo.
"I do still enjoy it, I love the training, and getting out of the house when I can, there’ll be plenty of time when I can't,” he added.
“I love playing but, on this team, you’re not guaranteed to start in the final even, so you just have to hope. Our aim is to get back up into the Senior Championship and stay in it.
"Maybe not win it but stay up in it for a few years and then hopefully build. There is a lot of young ones who are going to get stronger, fitter, faster, the likes of Joe and Justy McDade, Kai (McGoldrick), and others are going to get better as the years go on.
"Hopefully, they can go on and it win it, I will not be about if they do.”
Speaking on next year, he said: “I’ll have to see how Sunday goes whether I decide to come out next year, maybe I’ll stay on you never know.”
