Augher Stars 1 Dergview Reserves 2
Augher Stars are still looking for their first points in division one after they lost 2-1 at home to ten-man Dergview Reserves.
Dergview came into the game in confident mood having beaten league leaders Enniskillen Town in their last fixture, but they looked to be up against it when they had their goalkeeper dismissed in the first half.
Stars were unable to make their numerical advantage count, however, and two Philip Wallace goals proved enough for Dergview, with a late goal from Augher’s Travis Charleton not enough to salvage a point.
Stars manager Johnny Winser was taking the positives from the game, despite a feeling that they had let points slip away.
“It was probably the best we have played in our five games so far,” he said.
“We have had a really tough start and Dergview had no first team game which didn’t help, but at half time we were pretty much on top and they were down to ten men, so we were thinking we had a good chance.
"It was disappointing to lose and it feels like points dropped because of the way we played, but this league is very unforgiving. If you don’t take your chances and you make mistakes then you get punished.
"We are very positive though. We are not at full strength yet and we still have a few men to come in. We are finding our feet in the division and we are getting better with every game.”
In a closely contested opening to the match, there were limited goal scoring chances at either end, but as the half progressed Stars’ front two of Shea McDermott and Craig McSweeney started to look threatening, and McSweeny came close to opening the scoring with a shot that found the side netting.
Sam Barrett then delivered a cross for his brother Jack, but his shot was saved by Tiernan McNamee.
Five minutes before halftime the game appeared to swing in Stars' favour as McNamee picked up a back pass outside the penalty area, and with McDermott closing in on him the referee decided it was worthy of a red card.
Ten-man Dergview made the brighter start to the second half however, and took the lead after seven minutes when Philip Wallace pounced on a poor touch to pick up possession deep in Stars’ half.
His initial shot was saved, but he recovered to bundle the ball over the goal line and give his side the lead.
Andy Sproule had been forced to don the goalkeeper’s gloves for Dergview, and he saved from McDermott before Wallace added a second goal with ten minutes remaining.
Charleton did pull one goal back with a free kick into the top corner, but it was too little too late for Stars as they suffered another defeat.
