Lisbellaw Utd 3-1 Ardstraw

Three goals past the 90-minute mark made for an enthralling ending to Lisbellaw and Ardstraw’s meeting on Saturday in the Mercer League.

Craig Johnston had given United the lead with just over 20 minutes to go and just as Lisbellaw looked to be heading towards a 1-0 win, Paul Fusco scored a 90th-minute equaliser.

United would strike back immediately as Jamie Coalter put his side back in front before Johnston netted again to confirm the win.

It was Lisbellaw’s third league win of the season as they moved up to sixth while Ardstraw are level on points with Irvinestown Wanderers, with both teams just above bottom side Augher Stars.

The teams held a minute silence before kick-off for Lisbellaw club members Scott Johnston and Stuart Johnston who both suffered bereavements last week.

The first-half was a fairly even affair between the sides with any big chances hard to come by.

Goalkeepers Josh Brownlee and Jack McFarland were both called into action but to nothing of great concern.

After another closely contested beginning to the second half, Lisbellaw eventually got in front with around 23 minutes to go.

Craig Johnston cut inside and got the ball onto his left foot before curling in a shot into the far corner of the net.

Ardstraw pushed for a way back into the game after the opener with Lisbellaw still threatening for a second goal and limiting their opponents to any huge opportunities.

As the game entered the 90th minute, Ardstraw got their leveller and it was Paul Fusco who crashed an effort off the underside of the bar and into the net.

Lisbellaw’s response was quick as just a moment later they earned themselves a corner.

Craig Johnston swung the ball in and Jamie Coalter side-footed the ball in from a few yards out to restore the lead.

Johnston then put the result beyond doubt, deep into added time, when he took on his man and beat him before curling another effort into the far corner of the net for 3-1.

Speaking after the game, United player/manager Kyle McCleery said: “I’m pleased with how we played.

"We controlled most of the match so it would have been bitterly disappointing not to come away with the win, so I’m delighted to get the three points.

"We can now look forward to a massive game this week against Kilrea United in the Junior Cup.

"They’ve been flying lately so we know it’s going to be a tough one for us. It’s all about who wants it more on the day.”
